Early 20th Century Mirrored General Store Advertising Cabinet
A striking and exceptionally rare early 20th century advertising display bin by Monrad & Co. Chicago, featuring its original painted “CLOVES” label, hand-stenciled typography, mirrored front panel, and beautifully aged black japanned finish.
Originally used in a general store, apothecary, or spice merchant setting, this oversized countertop display cabinet embodies the character and patina collectors and designers search for but rarely find intact. The curved tambour-style lid retains faded gold “MONRAD & CO. CHICAGO” advertising across the top, while delicate floral stencil work frames the cabinet throughout.
The mirrored front creates extraordinary depth and reflection, making this piece as sculptural as it is functional. An ideal statement piece for a kitchen, pantry, coffee bar, wine room, retail display, or layered European-inspired interior.
The untouched wear, distressing, oxidation, and age-related surface variation are exactly what give this piece its authenticity and dramatic visual appeal.
